King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) aims to systematically assess the sustainability literacy of its students to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address environmental, social, and economic challenges. Measuring sustainability literacy allows the university to track student progress, identify areas for improvement in curricula and co-curricular programs, and strengthen graduates’ ability to integrate sustainable practices into their professional and personal lives.
The assessment framework focuses on three key domains: knowledge, skills, and attitudes/behaviors. Knowledge includes understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainability principles, and relevant policies and technologies. Skills cover the application of sustainable practices, problem-solving in real-world contexts, and project management for sustainable development. Attitudes and behaviors measure students’ awareness, responsibility, engagement, ethical decision-making, and participation in sustainability-focused activities both on and off campus.
KMUTNB employs a variety of tools to measure sustainability literacy. These include surveys and questionnaires to evaluate awareness and self-reported sustainable behaviors, knowledge tests embedded in relevant courses, and e-portfolios documenting student involvement in SDG-related projects and community engagement. Problem-based learning (PBL) projects, capstones, and interdisciplinary sustainability initiatives are assessed using standardized rubrics to evaluate application of knowledge and practical skills.
Data is collected at multiple points during students’ academic progression, including at program entry, mid-program, and graduation. This longitudinal approach allows KMUTNB to monitor growth in sustainability literacy over time, identify strengths and gaps, and compare results across different faculties and programs such as CIPE, ETAM, and DTBI. Findings are analyzed to inform curriculum development, enhance teaching strategies, and guide co-curricular and outreach initiatives. By systematically measuring sustainability literacy, KMUTNB ensures that its students develop the competencies needed to contribute meaningfully to the SDGs, fostering responsible citizenship and professional practice aligned with sustainable development principles.
